  2. in which its components are structured in
  3. relation to each other, rather than to the
  4. individual properties of those components.
  5. Thus the distinctive characteristics of
  6. chemical compounds are emergent properties of
  7. the way in which the constituent elements are
  8. organized, and cannot be explained by the
  9. particular properties of those elements taken
  10. in isolation. In biology, ecosystem stability
  11. is an emergent property of the interaction
  12. between the constituent species, and not a
  13. property of the species themselves.
  14.
