Features of a system that are due to the way
in which its components are structured in
relation to each other, rather than to the
individual properties of those components.
Thus the distinctive characteristics of
chemical compounds are emergent properties of
the way in which the constituent elements are
organized, and cannot be explained by the
particular properties of those elements taken
in isolation. In biology, ecosystem stability
is an emergent property of the interaction
between the constituent species, and not a
property of the species themselves.
